Great article, very informative.

Maybe you can help me,

When I search on my tweets from:sharonhartman), it comes up as not found. And, non of my tweets when used with a hashtag, get recorded either. (They do show up on my profile page)

Can you shed any light as to why this may be happening?

Thanks for sharing these tips to help protect unwitting Twitters from nefarious schemers and of course, thanks for using HootSuite.

Along with the URL preview, HootSuite's built-in link shortener also compares URLs with Google's malware/badsite list and presents a cautionary warning when a link matches.

We posted a bit more about this on the blog:

PS We're sending the Olympic flame from Vancouver to London, take good care of it ;-).

I think companies who don't use Twitter to help with improving customer service are missing a trick.

Mark - you have tweeted about great experiences you have had when tweeting about problems you are having and then somebody responds, offers a solution and you're impressed.

Recently I had a problem at M&S in Camberley and then tweeted about it. They do tweet but obviously not at the weekends! Or maybe they do and don't search on their name - anyway, they didn't respond, and I was disappointed. This was their opportunity to redeem themselves.

Under promise and over deliver! That's got to be the answer ...

Great advice again Mark... and thanks for pointing out that Twitter is a free service but will need to invest your time into it. So many 'experts' bang on about how its free without talking about time... keep it up Mark.

Excellent piece on a fundamental point of both business in general and the use of social media to both better serve customers/clients and react swiftly to needs, comments, market changes.
One key point I'd mention that I still find to be true after a quarter of a century back and forth across the pond: US companies are invariably better at service, as it is en-grained in US citizens childhood, whereas we Brits have a history of not complaining when service is not good. Starbucks is American and the company ethos will be driven into it's employees world-wide; Costa's is British.
Having said this, I don't like either of these or Cafe Nero. They are all the McDonalds and KFC's of the coffee world; homogenized environments all and over-priced. Sure, I use them as necessary, but not out of choice. If there's a lovely little coffee shop that's the real deal near one of these, I'll buy from the unique one every time.

Hi Mark,

I have to say that is the most useful piece of Twitter information I've ever found online. An Idiots guide to what to do in just a few lines. Perfect!

Thanks!

Mark

Good post

The only thing that you need to tweak is the "Before and After Date Type of Searches". Twitter search only keeps approx 1-3 weeks worth of data so you cannot search for info on an event from a month or two before. If I am missing something, please let me know

For instance, if you wanted to recall the conversation happening at the Web 2.0 expo in New York from late 2009, you can't do this on Twitter Search.

w2e until:2010-02-06 only generates results from the past week (in fact, it stops at Jan 29, 2010)

Attempting to refine the search results to w2e until:2009-11-20 yields nothing.

While Twitter search is a very powerful tool, the inability to mine data older than a few weeks old is a big shortcoming.
