Getting heard in a sea of Twitter noise

A common question that I get asked, is how do I get my message across to people, how do I make sure that they are listening to me and not to the other thousands of people that they are following. How do I get heard above the Twitter noise?

There is no easy answer to this, but there certainly are some things that you can be doing to increase your chances. On Twitter, you have the opportunity of demonstrating your knowledge and expertise, you can do this by answering questions, and inviting people to ask you things. You should also be engaging with people as much as you can, by asking them what they are doing, what they are up to etc…

It is also important that you look at what sort of tweets you are sending out. You want as many as possible to be retweeted by your followers. This is how you can grow your following, and one of the ways that you build up trust with your followers. You should also be passing on to your followers, great links, and resources that you find.

But make sure that you check out the links first. It will be your brand that is damaged if the link is not what you thought. Remember though that tweets should consist of social chit chat, the sharing of information, knowledge, resources, tools and links, and tweets about your expertise and occasionally promoting yourself.

You should also be thanking people that retweet your messages, and making sure that if people are asking you questions, or messaging you, that you are finding the time to answer them or engage with them.

Also remember that the people following you may well be in different time zones, so try sending out messages at different times of the day.

And finally remember, that all this will take time. You cannot simply turn up on Twitter, and expect people to listen to you, unless you are mega famous. You will need to spend time making sure that your twitter profile is as best as it can be, and to start sending out messages. Over time you need to start following some people, and people will follow you as well.
