Sports Stars Using Twitter to vent there displeasure

Kevin Pietersen the UK cricket player announced yesterday on Twitter that he had been dropped..Unfortunately the tweet has now been removed from his account, but in this article  you can see the Tweet and exactly what went on… My blog post is not about Kevin as a cricket player as frankly I dont know that much about him or cricket… This blog post is about whether Twitter should be utilised for such outbursts…..

In my opinion, Twitter is for everyone.. Sports stars are certainly most welcome.. I would love for most of the UK sports stars to be accessible via Twitter. I would encourage them all to tell us about themselves, not just what the official line is.. Twitter allows people to tell us more about who they are, and not just what they do…I am interested in what goes on after the match, during training, before an event etc… Twitter allows us as fans to get closer to our sports stars, that ultimately will benefit both the stars and the clubs they play for..

However, Twitter like any other tools needs to be used responsibly…When it comes to sports stars, there are other implications for them. People do place bets on matches, so Twitter followers knowing the changing room info, could seriously effect that.. But that is not an excuse to ban all players from utilising Twitter..

Sportstars just like many other celebrities need training. They need to be taught how to utilise Twitter, and what the impact can be of Tweeting out sensitive information. So lets all encourage our favourite sporting celebrities to get on Twitter..

In Kevins case, he clearly vented his outburst before the official announcement, and went against the official cricket boards policy on using Twitter for such things…To me this is unacceptable.. However, if he had made his views known after the official announcement, then I see no issues with him venting his dissapointment…..

What do you think? Should players utilise Twitter to vent their anger at bad sporting news…
