Is Content on Twitter still King?

I am sure that most of you will have heard the expression that content in King.. Well is it still king? Or is there something new in town? Each day approx 250 million tweets are sent out via Twitter. Everyone blasting out their links, messages, content and all vying for you to check out that article, read that message, buy that product, watch that video, retweet that tip and so on. So, with approx 500,000 people joining Twitter each and every day, the number of messages will only go up so how are you going to make sure that people are reading your stuff and not ignoring it like everyone else?

Context is the new Content…

I was watching a video recently from trailblazer Gary Vaynerchuck – @garyvee and he talks about context, and you know what he is spot on. The days of just producing excellent content are long gone, you need to be doing more than that now. And this must be your lucky day, as you now with Twitter you have a platform that lets you do exactly that – build context into your content. So what exactly do I mean?

I mean develop relationships around your excellent content. If you content is rubbish having great relationships wont help you much. Listen to others, invite questions, engage, engage, engage, reply, ask for feedback, get to know people, listen out for things that your followers are telling you that are important to them and then comment or engage with them on that topic.

You are in a battle, the battle for eyeballs and ears…Why do I want to read your article? Why do I want to check out your links etc? Part of that reason is that you have got to know me on a social as well as business level, you have taken an interest in me, engaged with me, commented on my stuff, read my stuff, consistantly demonstrated your knowledge and expertise, clicked on my stuff etc… in short you have built a relationship with me so I look out for your tweets and will do my best to support you if I can.

2012 is already here, still produce great content but add in context and you will truly have an awesome combination that will be hard to beat.. Please comment in the box below. Am I talking rubbish? do you agree /disagree with me? I would love to hear your thoughts…

Twitter experiment - Trying to sell tons of stuff really quickly

Can you sell stuff on Twitter, absolutely, but and it is a big but it is how you do it that is so important. I have been and will continue to tell people that to sell stuff on twitter you need to help, support, answer questions, advise, engage, reply, join in etc… and above all what you are after is not to much to sell to anyone that comes within 5 yards of you but to create advocates. These are people that over time will start to refer you and promote you to their networks.

But I wanted to do an experiment. To do this, I could not tell anyone. During the course of November 2011, I launched a 1hr Twitter training MP3 which you could buy for £5.. and I blasted it out there… non stop for approx 2 weeks.. and when I mean non stop, I mean non stop. The whole balance of my account shifted.. Yes I still did some social chit chat etc… but the vast majority of my tweets were… buy my MP3 etc…..

So.. what happened… Well I took a ton of flak, I am sure people stopped following me, a handful messaged me to say.. Why are you non stop selling now? I have to say that I found all the complaints and the new way I was doing things really uncomfortable, but I wanted to see for myself what happens when you just sell stuff.

Interestingly though, I did sell my MP3′s.. Approx 200 in a few weeks, but here is the thing. After a while, people switched off from my tweets, people stopped engaging with me, people stopped reading my stuff, and most importantly the sales dried up…The reason I suspect that I sold so many was the fact that until that point, I hardly ever sold anything..so people were intrigued as to why I was going so overboard with the promotion.. even though I thought it was truly amazing… But heh.. I would say that right?

So, firstly I want to apologise to all my followers who had to endure 2 weeks of me non stop selling.. I can assure you it was not pleasant for me either. And the funny bit is that the 1st thing I say on my MP3 twitter training thingy is that Twitter is not about selling.

Secondly.. Learn from my experiment. Just and I emphasise Just selling all day every day will get you nowhere. You must balance you account with social chit chat, sharing stuff, being interesting and interested, replying, engaging and having fun. All this done over time on a consistent basis will reap the rewards, not trying to do things in a short period of time to get fast results.

I am also pleased to say that normal service has now been resumed….
