Ryanair..flying in the wrong direction

I read this morning, that Ryanair, are looking into taking their first steps into the social media world.. Full article here What a shame that yet again a major corporate is so missing the point…

In the article they say ” Ryanair said it wouldn’t engage with consumers on third-party social sites like Facebook and Twitter. All activity will be hosted on ryanair.com

When will major brands, or infact all brands / businesses learn that social media is all about listening, and not broadcasting, its all about engaging with their customers… This is how they will truly get to learn all about their business, discover great new ideas, get some fresh perspective on how their business can move forward…

Ryanair would really benefit from reading the great article from Alan Stevens – Top Media and PR expert on the recent Nestle PR disaster, so as to avoid the same consumer backlash….

So in conclusion… it would be great to have Ryanair on Twitter, it would give us all a chance to engage with them, hear their views on their business, and actively listen to us with our concerns, and deal with them appropriately…

They could also take a leaf out of Easy Jet, who are on Twitter, and are a fine example of how to use Twitter effectviely..
